“...Category 5 denial is an enormous obstacle to any discussion of solutions. Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem.... I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are....”
“These events are early warning signs of even more devastating damage to come, some of which will be irreversible.”
The first quotation is by former Vice President Al Gore, and the second by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)–both about global warming.
While intense media attention suggests a “red” level of climate threat, the overall terror threat to America remains at “yellow”–while storm clouds gather:
In a February speech to the Munich Security Conference, Vladimir Putin “delivered the most aggressive verbal assault on the US and its European allies that a Russian leader has uttered since the Cold War ended 16 years ago.” He said that the U.S. had “overstepped its boundaries in every sphere” and was fueling a new nuclear arms race. Inclusion of former Soviet satellite states in NATO was destabilizing Europe and threatening Russia. Americans responded in “emollient tones” (Gerard Baker, The Times 2/12/07).
Russia has threatened to target proposed European missile defense sites with bombers, although the Czech radar and 10 Polish interceptors are to face south to protect against Iran, which has a small number of missiles capable of reaching Europe (WSJ 3/7/07).
According to the Russian News and Information Agency Novosti, an air-defense regimen equipped with new S-400 Triumf ground-to-air missile systems will be put on combat duty in the Moscow region in mid-2007. The firing range and capacity of the new system is double that of the S-300 systems now deployed.
Russia has tested a warhead that can change course in flight, enabling it to elude American anti-missile defenses. The U.S. has a few interceptors in Alaska and California to protect against an attack from North Korea, not a major strike from Russia (Wash Times 11/21/05). A maneuverable warhead is also an anti-satellite weapon, notes Philip Smith.
In January, China successfully tested an anti-satellite weapon (ASAT) against one of its own antiquated weather satellites, using a kinetic kill vehicle launched from a ballistic missile. China has extensively studied American use of satellite imagery in recent wars. The U.S. Defense Dept.'s annual report on Military Power of the People's Republic of China states that China will eventually deploy advanced imagery and reconnaissance systems for military purposes. Additionally, China plans to field ground-based laser ASAT weapons (Frederick Stakelbeck, Jr., www.FrontPageMagazine.com 2/23/07).
As Mark Helprin writes, the Chinese “know that every facet of America's economy, military and society depends on individual and networked electronic devices. Were these to fail all at once and irreparably, the nation would seize up, perhaps for years.”
Helprin also notes that as the U.S. reduces its nuclear arsenal from 10,000 strategic warheads to 1,700, China's MIRV'd silo-based missiles and imminent generations of MIRV'd mobile and sea-based ICBMs will easily allow a breakout from warhead numbers now variously estimated to number between 80 and 1,800 (Washington Post 3/4/07).
Israel's Home Front command and rescue services are planning the first-ever nationwide drill simulating a nuclear and chemical missile attack on numerous cities. The drill is intended to demonstrate lessons learned from last summer's attack by Hezbollah, which fired more than 4,000 rockets against northern Israel. At that time, a million people lived in bomb shelters for 34 days, as the government failed to activate the emergency home front program. The government having “disappeared,” local charities and private institutions filled in the gap (Jerusalem Post 3/11/07).
A U.S. table-top exercise to test responses to a terrorist attack utilizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) was criticized by Rep. Jim Morgan (D-VA) for “creating a state of fear beyond what is helpful.” “We don't have IEDs here,” he said (MSNBC.com 2/23/07).
The leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq is advertising on the internet for nuclear scientists and explosive experts. “The large American bases are good places to test your unconventional weapons, whether biological or dirty, as they call them” (New Yorker 3/12/07).
Researchers at the Center for Mass Destruction Defense (CMADD) detailed catas-trophic consequences of a nuclear attack ( www.ij-healthgeographics.com/content/6/1/5), which is increasingly likely. Calling for increased preparedness, coauthor Cham Dallas said: “There are actually steps that one can take to save lives. But we're running out of time.”
The Dept. of HHS has posted extensive information on Radiation Event Medical Management ( http://remm.nlm.gov/download.htm). The government has, however, decided against purchasing new drugs for acute radiation sickness. FEMA “in-depth” information for citizens (www.ready.gov) still contains no guide to measurement of radiation dose.
Plan for the government to “disappear”–as a source of help. In the TV series Jericho, the only evidence of national government function after a nuclear attack so far has been the launch of ICBMs. Imposters have come in Marine uniforms to loot supplies.
Is soap opera more realistic than government planners? It is at least provoking a lot of internet discussion. The late Conrad Chester of Oak Ridge National Laboratory predicted at a DDP meeting that only a nuclear attack could break through the denial.
“Clever entrepreneurs have seen an opening: carbon `offsetting' is a completely unregulated growth industry that offers to take your money in return for cancelling out your contribution to global warming,” writes Janet Daley (Telegraph 12/3/06). The U.S. market for carbon offsets could be $100 million per year.
As buyers and sellers of emissions credits tend to be secretive about how, exactly, their transaction reduces carbon emissions, it could be “vaporware” (Business Wk 3/26/07).
Celebrities at the Academy Awards received offsets from TerraPass, which gives money to Waste Management to burn methane from landfills. WMI is glad of the extra cash, but would have to dispose of the methane anyway to prevent groundwater contamination.
When criticized for the $30,000 annual utility bills for one of his homes, a Gore spokeswoman replied that he buys enough electricity from “renewable” energy sources to “balance” 100 percent of his electricity costs. Gore also offsets his enormous “carbon footprint” with emissions credits purchased for him by his company Generation Investment Management. GIM invests in companies expected to profit from global warming alarmism.
Global warming is a multibillion-dollar worldwide industry, based on “a lie...the biggest scam of modern times,” said filmmaker Martin Durkin. The Great Global Warming Swindle can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XttV2C6B8pU.
